If you need a website that you can actually update yourself, you should look at http://php.opensourcecms.com/. They have a huge list of Open Source Blogging and CMS software ad nauseam.

So what is the differences between blogs and CMS (content management systems)? In general, blogs simply display new posts in order. Each page has the same uniform look and feel as all the others. Blogs are limiting in that manner.

Today was the final day of my Google Adwords experiment. My $100 voucher is used up. So how much money did I make in total?

I made nothing at all. Zip. A big zero! Zilch!

I tried everything to make a profit.  I used Expedia.com, Buy.com, this website (web design), PearlParadise.com and tmiWireless.com.

While customizing a script for a client’s website, I chose Andrew Valums’ excellent script (under the MIT license). Following is a modified version of his script. I’m sure many will find it useful. It is intuitive and fairly easy to customize. You will need to use Jacascripts’s onclick or some Jquery functions to make use of the script, unless you only need a simple hyperlink.

GoArticles claims to be “the Web’s largest free content article directory.” The articles I have read under “most viewed” are the biggest load of garbage I have ever seen. Not only can the authors not string two coherent sentences together, they don’t know what they are talking about.

For example, one author explains how to “Make Money In 24 Hours – Proven Method.” Great! Now everyone know the secrete! The secrete is to create a blog teaching others how to make money writing blogs about teaching others about how to make money…

Another bright idea comes from Robert Woods. He promotes a program that automatically adds Youtube videos and content from free content directories for any topic you choose. In short, you get a ready-made blog full of plagiarized content.

I know these guys are making money hand-over-fist. Did you catch the sarcasm? But how do they sleep at night?

Losers.

Out of the blue my friend Google sent me a coupon with $100 Adwords credit. I’m sorry if you didn’t get a voucher. Google and I are pretty close. He is like an uncle to me. Remember the uncle who used to make you feel uncomfortable, but never crossed any lines? That’s uncle Google.

CNN headline: “‘Funeral’ being held today for aging Web browser.”

If you guessed that Internet Explorer 6 died, you would be correct. The poor baby. It grew up with diminishing respect from the Web community. Someone finally dealt the fatal blow, apparently at the Google headquarters.

I already miss my quirky friend. The constant Javascript errors. The ugly interface. And most of all, the error message: “Operation aborted,” where the browser would simply get tired of loading a web page and display a blank page instead. It would only happen after you had read half of the page already… the screen would simply go blank.

Following are the links you need to upgrade your browser. IE 6.0 would have given you his blessings.

Google Chrome

Firefox

Internet Explorer

May the computer gods have mercy on IE 6′s buggy code.

I’ve never been excited about a programming IDE before. That is until I tried Netbeans. The best thing about Netbeans is that it is free. The second best thing about Netbeans is that it is the best IDE there ever was.

It supports your favorite language. Netbeans even has a CSS builder. You can preview your changes on the fly for better looking websites. Netbeans features “semantic and syntactic highlighting, smart code completion, documentation pop-ups, and debugging integration.”

Using Jquery’s animate function, we can animate any element’s properties. The effect is achieved by changing the .css value associated with an element. In this tutorial, we will animate the color attribute to create a rainbow effect.

With so many different browsers and platforms being used today, it is not feasible to test your webpage in all of the different browsers out there… well, until now. Now you can go to one of these websites, enter your URL and see your page rendered in all of the popular browsers.

Browsershots

This is a great free website with over 80 different browser/OS combinations! The website is extremely slow, but make up for it by being free. If you are a broke designer, this is the website to use.

Since I began using JQuery, my external Javascript files were getting HUGE. Using the following code, my external JS went from 108,499 to 34,066 bytes. My fairly small css file went from 6100 to 1600 bytes.

The following code is a modified version of Reinhold Weber’s PHP code. His code did not add compression; it only combined multiple css files into a single file. I basically added the expires header so the files are cached for one year, and the magical line: ob_start(“ob_gzhandler”);
